Montessori School Safety Padding.

This week we fitted safety padding for a Montessori School in Dublin.
We were contacted around a week ago by Strand Montessori School, Sandymount, Dublin regarding the supply and installation of safety padding to a particular feature in their outdoor play area.
The feature in question was a large concrete pillar and the school thought it best to pad the pillar to prevent any possible accidents.
Fitness Functions designed, manufactured and fitted the customised safety padding within 7 days of the order.

The Safety Padding chosen.

The padding was manufactured using weatherproof impact padding wrapped in our heavy duty vinyl with a really strong velcro closure. The safety padding used was specifically designed to protect against impacts thus ensuring that no serious injuries will occur in the schools or play areas.

Our Gold Medal Safety Padding website is currently under construction, we hope to have the new site up and running by the end of next week (July 2012)

Gold Medal Safety Padding

The Gold Medal Safety Padding Product.

Since our last related Blog posted we’ve noticed an increased number of enquiries. A significant volume of our work does involve sports safety padding for schools & clubs, however Gold Medal Safety Padding is very different and in certain circumstances is the only padding we recommend.

Gold Medal Safety Padding is specifically designed for seclusion rooms in hospitals, psychiatric facilities and prisons where violent behaviour may result in injury to the patient, inmate or damage to the room.

Playground Markings during an ‘Irish’ Summer.

‘It’s has been the wettest June on record’ according to Met Eireann. Despite all this rain we have completed a number of Playground Marking projects for schools all around the country.  We’re keeping optimistic here and believe that with the schools now off and an improvement in the country’s weather we will be able complete many more Playground Marking jobs before September.

Safety Padding – Bespoke or Standard?

We’re often asked what type of sports safety padding we produce and the main differences. Well, we manufacture both standard and bespoke safety padding, they differ in terms of availability, technical specifications and pricing.

Standard Safety Padding.

The best examples of our standard safety padding would be our outdoor basketball padding designed to suit Department of Education outdoor basketball units for Irish schools & sports clubs. Others types of standard padding would Rugby, GAA goal post and wall padding. Generally we keep a constant stock of this type of padding.

Bespoke Safety Padding.

We have completed a number of bespoke projects, our most well known being the Ski Club of Ireland and Aviva Stadium. We produced almost 300 metres of padding for these venues, the padding produced was custom made and technically differed, as each client’s requirements were unique. Most of our bespoke work isn’t done on such a large scale, we work mostly with schools & sports clubs who require custom padding on items such as:

  1. Columns, pillars & window sills
  2. Corners of buildings
  3. Railing & fences
  4. Door jambs & arches

Your playground markings, start to finish – our process.

I first visited Castledockrell National School three weeks prior to applying the thermoplastic playground markings. The purpose of my visit to the school was to finalise the schools order and ensure that the markings wanted would fit the intended area.

Once at the school it became evident that some of the existing thermoplastic markings were in a very poor state. These original markings were not properly prepared before application and allowed water & frost to get underneath. Eventually the playground markings cracked and started to chip away. As part of the contract we agreed to remove these original playground markings.

With the schools order ready, I took advantage of a fine dry day and called out to the schools to start transforming their school yard.

The Process.

9am. Before 9am the existing, tatty markings were removed and the yard was measured out.

I started by installing a solid Hopscotch, measuring just short of 3m long and with the four primary colours which really brought life into that corner of the yard. This was followed by one of our newer marking of an A-Z alphabet spiral and our ever popular number snakes and a 3m diameter Target Board.

Giant Ladybird Hopscotch

1pm. By early afternoon it was to me move on to the centre piece of the schools yard – a Giant Ladybird Hopscotch consisting of 16 sections, measuring 3.6m x 3.6m and covering a total of nearly 13 square metres. Despite its size and complexity this markings offers great value for money.

With a vibrant red body, jet black spots and contrasting yellow markings this ladybird makes a great centre piece to any school yard and gives the children hours of fun.

3pm. Finished playground markings project, all cleaned up and ready to get back to the office. The markings put onto the school yard will last the school for many years, remaining vibrant in colour and fully non-slip for safe use in all weathers.

Irish Primary PE Association 9th Annual Conference.

The 9th Annual Irish Primary Physical Education Association (IPPEA) conference was staged in Marino Institute of Education, Dublin, on the 3rd March. The IPPEA was founded in 2002 has a number of aims, principally it is “dedicated to heightening awareness of PE issues in primary schools and it aims to promote physical activity in an educational context.”

This year’s event was a tremendous success and has noticeably grown year on year. This weekend an even greater number of primary school teachers arrived in Dublin for more work shops, both indoor and outdoor. In the morning the workshops covered areas such as Creative Dance, Outdoor & Adventure and Gymnastics.  In the afternoon the focus turned to workshops such as Disc Golf (no golf clubs !!) and Yoga for children.

As the IPPEA members made their way between the various workshops there was an obvious sense of excitement, participation and enthusiasm. Without doubt many valuable skills and practical PE activities will be incorporated into the various primary schools PE timetables around the country over the coming weeks.

A Big Thank you!

Fitness Functions would like to thank the IPPEA executive committee & members for the opportunity to attend its annual conference. We were made feel very welcome from the moment we arrived.  We would like to thank all those primary school teachers that came to visit our stand with queries on PE equipment, playground markings and services, hopefully our sales and marketing manager Niall Clancy was able to assist you.

We now look forward to the 10th annual conference and hope to see you all again.
